When you vote by raising your hand or speaking your choice, you are not able to keep your choice a secret.
Why is it important to vote in secret? If we know someone is watching how we vote, we may feel we need to change our vote to make someone else happy.
One way to vote in secret would be to write out your choice on a slip of paper and drop it in a box to be counted later.
  
But for a large group, like the entire school, it would take too long to count those ballots.
